All They Want is a Better Life

It has made major news lately that DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), a program initiated by president Obama back in his term, is coming to an abrupt end. First, here is some official background information from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website accompanied by a video explaining the process:

What Is DACA
On June 15, 2012, the Secretary of Homeland Security announced that certain people who came to the United States as children and meet several guidelines may request consideration of deferred action for a period of two years, subject to renewal. They are also eligible for work authorization. Deferred action is a use of prosecutorial discretion to defer removal action against an individual for a certain period of time. Deferred action does not provide lawful status.

DACA is a program that has made it eligible for non-resident/citizen people under the age of 31 to live, study and work in the United States whereas before they were subject to deportation immediately. Through this, nearly 800,000 children and young adults have had a shot at a more promising future in the United States and have been able to work and advance their academic career.

However, with the establishment Trump in office, he has announce that he will remove DACA unless Congress can come up with a solution that is 'constitutional'. By ending this policy, he is robbing hundreds of thousands of people the promised right to work and reside here legally. Ending this program is cruel because it encouraged dreamers to step out of the shadows and chase the long-sought-after "American Dream". These people have put trust in the country and the program, only to have it stripped from them and now be punished for it.

Members of Congress have publicly and privately called on the administration to preserve the program long enough for a legislative fix, but until a solution has been found, these people will live in utter fear of being deported to a country they don't even know or remember.

It has come to my attention that many people are not aware of this problem. I encourage everyone to look into and advocate in some way for the sake of justice. As someone with a close friend back home who is able to stay here because of this program, it breaks my heart to see such a cruel act performed by our president. To any Dreamers reading this, I applaud your resiliency and I have you in my prayers.

    Anthony,
The issue you described sounds incredibly unfair and unfortunate. What do you think Trump's purpose was for removing DACA? What do you think of that purpose/goal? What forms of civil disobedience have been done to protest against this ?

  3. I think it is interesting to see how a govement policy like this can have such profound person impacts on people lives? Do you think there is a disconnect between political figures and the individuals who are most effected by these decisions?
